Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area

The Baviaanskloof wilderness area is a short drive away from Plettenberg bay.Albergo Baviaanskloof 02

We took Leslie (the owner of Albergo for Backpackers) for a surprise weekend getaway to The Baviaanskloof. The area is absolutely amazing, raw, pure, unspoiled nature. We drove from Plettenberg Bay over the N2 towards Humansdorp. You take the turnoff to Hankey and Patensie. Once you turn off the N2 you find yourself in rural Africa. Patensie is famous for the citrus plantations, they harvest oranges, lemons and grape fruits. Albergo Baviaanskloof 08
After about 70 km you drive along the Gamtoos river and the Groot river straight  into the Baviaanskloof. On the way we saw some kudu grazing in the river. In the morning we saw the Baboons playing along the river. The weather was amazing, sunny and super hot. We stayed at Bruintjieskraal chalets and camping in Glencoe. Celebrating Leslie’s 50th birthday we treated ourselves with hiring 2 chalets. Kudu and Ribbok, 2 beautiful wooden, fully equipped, self catering chalets. Overlooking the Grootrivier and the majestic mountains.Albergo Baviaanskloof 06
Because it is such a short drive from Albergo for Backpackers in Plettenberg Bay you can easily go for a weekend away.  Take some friends with you, like we did! It is so much fun, playing in the river and driving around! Go explore the river, the mountains and enjoy. You can go for a trail-run or take your bike. A friend of us always says: “Wherever there is a dirt road you can go for a cycle”!

At night we had a lekker (amazing in Afrikaans) braai (barbecue in Afrikaans). We hired the “Lapa” (barbecue outside area) to have a birthday braai. The Lapa had a swimming pool, which was pretty cool! We needed as much water to cool of during this weekend as possible. With temperatures over 45 degrees Celcius it was great to have a river, “foot-spa” and swimming pool nearby.
